Everything You Need to Know About a CEREC Same Day Crown
There’s a special, accomplished feeling that comes from bursts of productivity allowing you to quickly check items off your to-do list. It’s a pleasant, gratifying feeling to be able to look at the progress you’ve made in so little time. That said, there are some tasks where quality is just as important as—if not more important than—speed, especially if you want the results to last. If you’re just learning about a CEREC same day crown, you might find yourself wondering which category they fit into.
After all, you want your dental crown to last for as long as possible. On the other hand, getting to check your treatment off your to-do list after just one visit to the dentist sounds pretty tempting, especially when you’re trying to balance a busy schedule. Getting your dental crown in a single appointment also means you’ll only need to get your mouth numbed once, so there are plenty of potential benefits to CEREC crowns!
But how do same day crowns measure up to traditional crowns? To help you learn more about this type of crown and whether they’re right for you, we’ve answered five of the most common questions people ask about them.
What is a same day crown?
True to their name, same day crowns are a type of dental crown that you can receive in a single day. Generally, traditional dental crowns take two appointments over the course of a couple of weeks to receive, largely because they are often milled in an outside lab. As a result, you spend your first appointment getting your tooth prepared for a crown, having molds taken of your teeth, and receiving a temporary crown. When your permanent crown has arrived at your dentist’s office, you’ll then come in for your second appointment to have it placed on your tooth. Same day crowns eliminate the need for a temporary crown by allowing Dr. Barr or Dr. Diachenko to prepare your tooth and place your permanent crown in the same visit. CEREC’s advanced dental technology does this by giving your dentist the tools to design and mill your new tooth right in our office in about an hour.
What does CEREC mean?
CEREC stands for “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics.” This advanced piece of technology includes digital scanners and computer-aided design to help you receive your dental crown as comfortably, quickly, and conveniently as possible—all without sacrificing the quality of your dental crown. These features make same day crowns possible, allowing you to resolve issues like a severely cracked or chipped tooth and gain tooth pain relief in a single appointment.
What are they made of and do they last as long?
Same day crowns are made of the same porcelain material that many traditional dental crowns are made from, so they’re just as durable as other porcelain dental crowns. Porcelain is a strong material that stands up well to daily wear and tear. In fact, it’s about as strong as your natural teeth, so it needs about the same level of care. Whether you choose to get a same day crown or a traditional crown, the porcelain can break, crack, or chip if you use it for tasks your teeth weren’t designed for, such as cracking open nuts or tearing packaging open—just like your natural teeth! Porcelain is also even more stain-resistant than your natural teeth and is easy to tint to match the shade of your natural teeth, allowing it to blend into your natural smile throughout its life. With proper oral hygiene and care, your same day crown will last just as long as a traditional porcelain crown—around 15 years or more. That’s a great deal of longevity for such a quick process!
Does a same day crown fit as well?
Yes, same day crowns fit incredibly well—potentially better than traditional porcelain crowns. The secret lies in CEREC’s digital scanning and computer-aided design technology. To design your crown, your dentist uses CEREC’s digital scanner instead of traditional putty. Taking these scans is as simple as passing the scanner, which is about the size of an electric toothbrush, over your teeth. The result is a high-quality 3D image of your teeth and bite, which Dr. Barr or Dr. Diachenko will then use to design your crown. The system allows your dentist to place the crown into the digital model to see how it interacts with the teeth around it and your bite as a whole. This helps ensure that it’s not placing too much pressure on nearby teeth and that it fits into your bite perfectly! Plus, Dr. Barr or Dr. Diachenko will always check your bite when they place your crown to ensure that it’s situated on your tooth perfectly.
How much does a same day crown cost?
Like any other type of crown, the exact cost of your same day crown depends on several factors, including which tooth needs the crown and differing prices between dental practices. Generally, the CEREC crowns themselves cost a little bit more than traditional dental crowns, but some expenses are reduced by eliminating the need to pay for a temporary crown or a second visit to our office. If you’re not sure whether or not a same day crown will fit your budget, don’t worry! When you visit our office for a consultation, we can provide you with an estimate for the cost of your treatment, including what your insurance plan is likely to cover. This ensures that you aren’t blindsided by any costs, giving you all the knowledge you need to make the best choice for you!
