What’s so special about porcelain veneers?

Have you ever wondered how celebrities keep their teeth bright, white, and perfectly straight? Of course you have, and for good reason. With so much pressure from fans to look good on screen, celebrities often seek cosmetic dental procedures to give them a better smile. A popular choice among many stars is porcelain veneers, which are an excellent option for those who want to disguise stains, discoloration, chips, or minor gaps in their smile.

Porcelain veneers provide a uniform look.

The No. 1 reason that people get porcelain veneers is that they provide uniformity, masking what might otherwise be crooked or misaligned teeth. But veneers are also a great adjunct treatment to teeth whitening, especially if you are trying to fix more than one thing about your smile’s appearance. So if your teeth are misaligned and can afford to be a bit whiter, then veneers might be the best cosmetic dental solution.

Many well-known celebrities, such as Miley Cyrus, George Clooney, Tom Cruise, and Nicolas Cage, have turned to porcelain veneers to disguise gaps, lengthen short teeth, whiten their smiles, or cover crooked smiles. Thus, it only makes sense that veneers can dramatically improve your teeth’s appearance too. With veneers, Drs. Barr and Diachenko can create a straight, brilliant smile that enhances your look and self-esteem.

Veneers cover the front surface of your teeth.

When discussing various smile-makeover options with our patients, we often get asked what veneers actually are. So if you haven’t heard of dental veneers, you aren’t alone. Porcelain veneers, otherwise referred to as dental veneers, are super-thin, custom shells created out of tooth-colored dental materials. We bond these veneers to the front of your teeth to improve your facial appearance and overall smile, ultimately changing your entire look by addressing color, shape, size, and length.

You may be a candidate for porcelain veneers.

The best candidate for porcelain veneers is someone with minor cosmetic imperfections or stained teeth. Candidates must be in good oral health and practice good home care, including brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush, flossing once per day, and rinsing with a fluoridated mouthwash. Ideally, you will also have moderately straight teeth and no history of bruxism (teeth grinding). Drs. Barr and Diachenko also recommend that anyone wanting veneers cease smoking or the use of tobacco products prior to treatment. Smoking after your porcelain veneers are cemented in place is not recommended as tobacco products can still stain your natural teeth underneath and lead to additional dental and health problems.

Veneers are a permanent cosmetic solution.

Don’t take the decision to get porcelain veneers lightly; they are a permanent cosmetic solution because they require Drs. Barr and Diachenko remove a thin layer of enamel in preparation for your permanent veneers. Since enamel does not grow back, you can’t have the treatment reversed. If you decide to get porcelain veneers, you should know that they are designed to remain in place for the rest of your life. Veneers usually last between 10 and 20 years, depending on your oral health and oral hygiene routine. If your veneers loosen, break, or wear out over time, you will need to have them replaced.

Porcelain veneers feel similar to your natural teeth.

When patients consider porcelain veneers as part of their smile makeover, they often ask what the veneers will feel like. The answer is that porcelain veneers should feel completely natural in your mouth, especially if an experienced cosmetic dentist has placed them. You shouldn’t even notice your new veneers when you’re speaking, chewing, or brushing your teeth. Though it might take a week or so to get used to your new veneers, they don’t require any special care aside from your usual oral hygiene routine, and they should look and feel just like your natural teeth.

Veneers are mostly stain resistant.

While porcelain veneers are extremely stain resistant, they can still pick up some stain over long periods of time. Refraining from foods and beverages that are known to stain your natural teeth, such as red wine, coffee, tea, dark-colored berries, soda, beets, and fruit juices, can help ensure that your veneers will continue to match your adjacent natural teeth.
